If fast charging works when your phone is cool but drops to normal charging after the phone heats up, the phone is probably limiting charging power because of temperature.
That does not necessarily mean the charger, cable, or battery has failed. Modern phones monitor battery and device temperature while charging. When the temperature rises far enough, the phone can reduce charging current or temporarily pause charging rather than continue generating more heat.
Apple documents this behaviour directly. An iPhone can show Charging On Hold when it becomes too hot or too cold and charging resumes after the temperature returns to an acceptable range. Samsung also states that Galaxy devices can limit charging speed when device temperature rises.
This is why a phone may fast charge normally for the first few minutes and then suddenly slow down.
Why Fast Charging Can Make the Phone Warmer
Fast charging pushes more electrical power into the phone than ordinary charging. Not all of that energy ends up stored in the battery; some becomes heat in the battery, charging circuitry and power-management components.
A slightly warm phone during fast charging is therefore not unusual.
Problems usually appear when charging heat combines with another source of heat.
For example, the phone may already be warm because you are:
- playing a game;
- using GPS navigation;
- recording video;
- making a long video call;
- using mobile data heavily;
- running the screen at high brightness;
- charging in a hot room or parked car.
The phone then has less room to absorb the extra heat produced by fast charging.

Why It Fast Charges at First but Slows Down Later
This pattern is one of the clearest signs that temperature may be involved.
Imagine plugging in a phone at 20% battery while it is cool. The phone initially accepts a high charging rate because the battery and internal components are within a comfortable temperature range.
After ten or twenty minutes, the battery is warmer. If the processor is also working hard or the room is hot, internal temperature can continue climbing.
The phone's charging controller can then reduce the amount of power it accepts.
You may notice:
- the fast-charging message disappears;
- the estimated charging time becomes longer;
- the battery percentage starts rising more slowly;
- charging pauses for a while;
- fast charging returns after the phone cools.
The charger may still be capable of supplying its full rated wattage. The phone is simply choosing not to draw that much power at that moment.
Check Whether Heat Is Really the Cause
Do not assume every slow-charging problem is thermal.
A simple comparison can tell you much more than repeatedly changing chargers.
Charge the phone once while it is cool and mostly idle. Keep the screen off, stop gaming or navigation, and leave it somewhere away from sunlight.
Then compare that with what happens when the phone is already warm.
Heat is a strong suspect if fast charging:
- starts normally when the phone is cool;
- weakens as the phone gets hotter;
- works better with the screen off;
- works better in a cooler room;
- returns after the phone has cooled.
If charging stays slow even when the phone is completely cool, another cause is more likely.
The charger, cable, charging port, charging protocol, battery condition or a device setting may need to be checked instead.
Do Not Rely on One Temperature Number
There is no single temperature such as 40°C or 45°C at which every smartphone stops fast charging.
Manufacturers use different batteries, charging systems, sensors, and thermal-control rules. A phone can also monitor temperature in places you can not measure accurately by touching the back panel.
The temperature shown by a battery-monitoring app is not necessarily the only temperature the charging system uses when deciding how much power to accept.
Apple recommends using iPhone in ambient temperatures between 0°C and 35°C and explains that charging can be limited when temperature becomes unsuitable. Samsung publishes a similar recommended operating range for Galaxy devices.
Those figures describe recommended environmental conditions. They should not be treated as a universal fast-charging cutoff for every phone.
What to Do When the Phone Gets Hot While Fast Charging
If the phone is noticeably hot and charging speed has dropped, reduce the heat rather than trying to force fast charging back on.
Stop gaming, navigation, video recording or other demanding tasks. Turn the screen off and leave the phone idle for a while.
Move it away from direct sunlight or another heat source.
If you use a thick case, try removing it during one charging session and see whether the phone stays cooler. Apple and Google both mention case removal as something worth trying when heat or charging problems occur.
If the phone is already very hot, disconnect the charger until it cools.
Let it cool naturally at room temperature. Do not put a hot phone in a refrigerator or freezer. Rapid cooling can create condensation, which introduces an entirely different risk around the phone's electronics.
Once the device returns to a suitable temperature, normal charging behavior should usually return without changing a hidden setting or installing an app.
A Slowdown Near 80% or 90% May Have Nothing to Do With Heat
Battery percentage also affects charging speed.
Phones do not usually accept their highest possible charging power all the way from a low battery level to 100%. Charging power is adjusted throughout the session and it normally falls as the battery approaches full charge.
So these two situations are different:
The phone slows as it becomes hot: temperature is a likely factor.
The phone slows mainly when the battery is nearly full: normal charging management may be responsible.
Apple, for example, explains that charging current is gradually reduced as an iPhone battery approaches full charge.
Testing the phone from a relatively low battery percentage while it is cool makes it easier to separate these two behaviors.
When the Heat Is Not Normal
A warm phone during fast charging is common. A phone that becomes extremely hot during ordinary charging deserves more attention.
Stop charging and investigate further if:
- the phone becomes painfully hot to hold;
- temperature warnings appear repeatedly;
- charging stops every time even in a cool room;
- the phone heats up while sitting idle;
- one particular charger makes the phone much hotter than another compatible charger;
- the charging port smells burnt or looks damaged;
- the back or screen appears to be lifting away from the frame.
A raised back cover or separating screen can be a sign of battery swelling. Do not continue charging a device with a visibly swollen battery.
Google advises disconnecting a Pixel and moving it to a cooler location if it becomes excessively hot. Samsung provides similar guidance for Galaxy devices that overheat while charging.
What If Fast Charging Never Comes Back After the Phone Cools?
Heat is less convincing as the main cause if the phone has cooled completely but fast charging still does not return.
Test the phone again at a low-to-medium battery level while it is idle and at normal room temperature.
If it still charges slowly, check the charging system next. A cable can support ordinary charging but fail to carry the power needed for a faster charging mode. The adapter may not support the protocol required by the phone. Debris or damage in the charging port can also interfere with power delivery.
The key clue with temperature-related charging slowdown is repeatability: fast charging works while the phone is cool, drops as the phone heats up and returns after it cools.
When that pattern keeps repeating, the slower charging rate is usually the phone's thermal protection doing its job rather than evidence that fast charging has permanently stopped working.
